Weddings in beautiful Italy

Italia Weddings offer you the possibility to celebrate a civil ceremony, a religious ceremony or a simple blessing.

  Civil ceremonies

In Italy civil ceremonies can only be held in Town Halls (Comuni) or in special palazzis, villas and gardens approved       by the local government.

A civil ceremony is a smooth (and often cheap) option for your wedding:

- It is conducted by the Mayor or a civil registrar in Italian with an official interpreter;

- It is valid and recognized in your own country;

- It requires two witnesses;

- It lasts approximately 20 minutes;

- It can be personalized by playing music or reading poetry of your choice.

The following documents are required to celebrate a civil wedding in Italy:

- No Impediment certificate issued by the English Registrar's Office;

- Full birth certificate (long form);

- Photocopies of valid passports for the couple and the two witnesses;

- Previous original marriage certificates and divorce/widow decrees, if applicable. Please note that at least 300 days       must pass between the date shown on the bride's divorce decree and the date fixed for the wedding.

  Catholic and mixed ceremonies

In Italy Catholic ceremonies are normally celebrated in a Church when both bride and groom are Catholic. However,       if one of the parties is of a different religion, a Catholic wedding is still possible as long as he or she attends the required pre-marital classes and has the paperwork approved by the religious authorities in Italy. In the case of one    or both parties being divorced, the Catholic Church will not allow them to remarry, unless they obtain an annulment   from the Catholic Authorities (La Sacra Rota).

A Catholic ceremony is legally binding, and can be celebrated either in English or in Italian with an official interpreter.
The following documents are required for a Catholic wedding:

- Declaration from your Pastoral Advisor that both bride and groom are active in the Catholic Church and seriously  intend having a religious blessing;

- Certificate of Baptism;

- Certificate of First Communion;

- Certificate of Confirmation.

All the above documents must be sent to the Bishop in the city of residence to obtain the 'Religious Non Objection Declaration'. Once these have been returned to you, they must be forwarded, together with all the documents listed   for the civil ceremony to the local Bishop's See in Italy to obtain the Italian 'Religious Nulla Osta'.
All the documents must be shown at least one month before the ceremony to give the priest and archbishop in Italy time to review the paperwork.

  Protestant ceremonies

It is possible for you to have a valid protestant wedding. In this case it can be held in a church or in the same locations as the reception, and you can also bring your own celebrant, if you like.

Symbolic ceremonies

Symbolic ceremonies are simple blessings that are chosen from couples who have already had their legal wedding celebration, or from those who simply want to renew their vows. These ceremonies can take place in any venue and       do not require any legal document. Virtually anybody can conduct the ceremony and the choice of settings and surroundings is endless.
